Porsche EVs, hybrids targets one of the auto industry’s most agressive

By 2025, EV and hybrid sales by luxury automaker Porsche will account for as many as half the vehicles sold by the company, according to the Porsche’s head of sales and marketing.

The Wolfsburg, Germany-based company is getting ready to market the all-electric Mission E sports car in 2019 and says it will add the battery-powered four-door Mission E Cross Turismo next year as well.

Earlier in the year, Porsche said it would have 25 per cent EV sales in 2025, however, Chinese policies implemented to reduce pollution have spurred automakers like Porsche to boost their production of EVs.

“The train for electric mobility has well and truly left the station,” Porsche sales head Detlev von Platen told Bloomberg. “China is and will remain the biggest market for electric cars for the foreseeable future.”

Bloomberg reports the shift to Porsche EVs and hybrids follows the appointment of Herbert Diess as chief executive officer at Volkswagen.  Porsche is part of the Volkswagen group, which sells passenger cars under the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda and Volkswagen names.

Diess has said in the past that he wants the Volkswagen Group to adapt faster to the technology shift that is impacting the auto industry.

In that spirit, Porsche, the group’s most profitable brand by return on sales, has committed to a fundamental overhaul in an effort to maintain its industry-leading margins.

Under the strategy, Porsche will optimize its combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and EVs.  The company says consumers are already responding with about 60 per cent of buyers of the Panamera four-door coupe in Europe opting for the hybrid version.

Porsche says it will also offer new battery technology in its iconic 911 which could provide an extra boost.

In 2017, Porsche hit a new sales record, increasing by 4 per cent to 246,000 cars.  The Macan SUV is credited with driving the growth.
