Deadly Fire at CFB Wainwright Leaves Military Personnel Injured as Blaze Spreads

October 18, 2026 | Alberta, Canada

A fire that erupted at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in east-central Alberta on Saturday has killed at least seven people and injured dozens more.  The blaze began in the base’s training area at approximately 4 p.m. local time on Saturday and quickly spread beyond its boundaries, the Department of National Defence confirmed Sunday.

Officials will release an official death toll and the number of injured once all victims are identified and families notified.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to speak about the tragedy at 12 p.m. Eastern.

Exact Cause of Incident Under Investigation

Quebec media are reporting that an explosion may have occurred when a gas pipeline or well was struck during a military firing exercise at CFB Wainwright.

TVA Nouvelles reported Sunday that the explosion was followed by a major fire that spread rapidly in high winds. The Department of National Defence has not confirmed the account, and investigators are still looking into the cause.

High Winds Complicate Emergency Response

Military and civilian emergency crews rushed to the scene as powerful winds swept across the region. The Associated Press reported gusts reaching 100 kilometres an hour, helping the flames spread into surrounding rural areas. The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire crossed the base fence and that the active fire area was south of Township Road 44-0.

By 11 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said they had contained the fire and protected homes and critical infrastructure. No evacuation order had been issued for the town.

Residents were urged to avoid affected roads and allow emergency vehicles to pass. The scale of the medical response extended beyond Wainwright. The Associated Press reported that injured people were transported for treatment and that Edmonton hospitals responded to a large influx of patients.

Military Leaders Confirm Deaths

In the department’s Sunday statement, Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan described it as a profoundly difficult moment for the Canadian Armed Forces. She said the military’s immediate priorities were supporting affected people, assisting emergency crews and protecting personnel, families and the surrounding community.

“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Prime Minister Carney tweeted Sunday. “We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s tweet: “We are learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright today that is affecting many of our brave military personnel. Alberta’s government is in close contact with the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney as this situation evolves. Thank you to the first responders and all those providing care and support to those affected.”
