Keystone XL to transport 700,000 b/d of Alberta crude to US
On Monday, the National Energy Board (NEB) approved TransCanada’s request to begin winter clearing work on the North Spread of the Keystone XL project.
According to the regulator, TransCanada has satisfied the regulatory requirements for winter 2019 clearing of trees and shrubs along the pipeline route’s north section, which begins in Hardisty, Alberta.
The approval only applies to the North Spread of the project. The NEB says clearing activities in other areas of the project, other construction activities and and any activity during the restricted periods for migratory birds have been excluded from the approval.
TransCanada Corp. is building Keystone XL, which will transport 700,000 barrels per day (b/d) of Alberta crude to the United States.
In 2015, former US President Barack Obama rejected TransCanada’s request to build the US portion of the international pipeline. Soon after taking office, President Donald Trump reversed the decision and approved the line from Hardisty to Steele City, Nebraska.
The NEB says further construction on the line will be subject to its approval.
