Northeastern BC frac sand terminal located in Buick
Superior Silica Sands, a subsidiary of Texas-based silica sand mining company Emerge Energy Services, says it has signed an agreement with Torq Energy Logistics to open a northeastern BC frac sand terminal in the community of Buick, 73 kms north of Fort St. John.
The announcement comes as growing anticipation surrounds an expected final investment decision on the $40 billion LNG Canada project. LNG Canada would ship natural gas from northeastern BC’s Montney Formation to a West Coast terminal in Kitimat, BC.
Torq Energy Logistics is an independent energy logistics and midstream company that operates six multi-product rail terminals, storage and offers fluid hauling and vac services trucks to oil and gas producers in Western Canada.
The facility has Canadian National Railway access, which will provide the company with strategic, one-line haul from Emerge’s Barron, Wisconsin frac sand mining operation.
“This new terminal in Buick highlights the importance of Western Canada to our business and our commitment to serving key customers in the growing Montney shale play,” said Rick Shearer, Chief Executive Officer of Emerge Energy.
Construction is expected to be completed by the middle of August, and once operational, the BC frac sand terminal will Emerge Energy’s fourth Western Canadian terminal among 12 total active operations across North America.
The terminal will have the capacity to expand to handle unit train shipments, but will initially accept shipments with rail-to-truck storage capacity for 45 railcars.
Emerge Energy says it has contracted with a third party terminal operator to provide flexibility and minimize capital costs. The BC frac sand operation will be built for Emerge Energy’s exclusive use.
Calgary-based Torq Energy Logistics will construct and operate the facility while offering 24/7 service to meet the needs of Emerge Energy’s customers.
“Torq has a strong reputation in the energy logistics industry, and we are confident that they will do an outstanding job managing this important facility”, said Shearer.
Shearer said his company is in the late stages of contracting with a key Canadian customer on a take-or-pay basis.
“We look forward to a bright future for northern white sand demand in the Western Canadian market.”
